Types of Fabric

fabric types

Here is a handy list of natural and synthetic fabrics.

Natural fabrics:

  • Angora
  • Camel
  • Alpaca
  • Cashmere
  • Cotton
  • Hemp
  • Linen
  • Mohair
  • Misc. Plant fibers (Abaca, Banana, Pineapple)
  • Ramie
  • Silk
  • Wool

Synthetic fabrics:

  • Acetate
  • Acrylic
  • Elastane
  • Lyocell
  • Nylon
  • PLA Fiber (corn polymer)
  • Polyester
  • Rayon
  • Spandex

I prefer natural fabrics because they feel more comfortable against the skin and “breath” better.  My second preference would be mixed fabrics like cotton/rayon or cotton/spandex blends.

What are your preferred fabric types?

Core pieces for your wardrobe

The items below are a list of core wardrobe items that everyone should try to have in their closets.  The pieces can be mixed and matched with your existing wardrobe and are versatile for many different looks.

1. A  tailored suit (either with pants or a skirt for a bottom). The items can be worn separately for a less formal look. I love wearing suit jackets with jeans and pretty shoes.

2. A cashmere sweater in a neutral colour. I prefer cardigans or wrap around styles.

3. A white cotton button up shirt.

4. A little black dress for evening occasions.

5. A day dress in a wrap or sheath style.

6. A pair of dark wash jeans.

7. High heels.

8. Ballet flats.

9. Boots.

10. Pearls.

11. A good quality handbag.

organized closet

A jet setter once told me that all a woman needs when travelling is a pair of heels, jeans, a lbd and a nice white cotton button up shirt and she will be set to go. Spend as much as your budget will allow on your core items.  These pieces are meant to last for many, many years and are the foundation of a wardrobe. From these pieces you add on additional pieces until you have a complete wardrobe that fits your lifestyle. I think that clothing should be versatile and be of good quality. I believe in having less items that are worn more often as opposed to having a closet full of clothes that are rarely ever worn.  In a future post, I will share an easy wardrobe plan that I use with my clients.
